Your tyres are the vehicle’s contact with the road, so tread depth, pressure and condition matter for braking, steering and wet-weather grip.
What is the UK legal tyre tread depth?
For most cars and light vans, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around its entire circumference. A tyre can still need attention before it reaches the legal minimum if it is damaged, losing pressure or wearing abnormally.
Check more than the tread
Look for cuts, bulges, cracking, embedded objects and uneven wear. Check pressures against the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation when the tyres are cold.
Uneven tyre wear
Wear concentrated on one edge or an unusual pattern can indicate pressure, alignment or suspension issues. Fixing the underlying cause can help prevent the replacement tyre wearing prematurely.
Need tyres in Dumfries?
Car Care Dumfries supplies and fits car and van tyres from Kellwood Business Park. We can also inspect tyre condition, balance wheels and assess punctures for repair where appropriate.
