DPF Warning Light: What It Means & What to Do

Presentation updated October 2026

Diesel particulate filter cleaning illustration

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) captures particulate matter from diesel exhaust gases. The vehicle periodically needs conditions that allow the filter to regenerate and reduce the accumulated soot.

Why does a DPF warning light appear?

A warning can occur when soot loading increases or regeneration cannot complete. Driving pattern can contribute, but DPF problems can also be associated with engine, sensor, temperature, EGR or other faults. That is why repeatedly forcing regeneration without understanding the cause is not always the right solution.

Can you keep driving?

Follow the instructions in your vehicle handbook. If the warning remains on, additional warning lights appear, the vehicle loses power or enters a reduced-performance mode, arrange diagnosis rather than continuing to ignore it.
